Who should we donate to?

You all voted at the beginning of the school year for what to do with the money we earn from cookie sales.  The winner was cancer charity.  I found five candidates.  You will receive an email from Survey Monkey to vote on which charity or charities you would like to see the money go to.  We have $1,000 which is a lot of money and will make a BIG difference to any of these charities!  Way to go Troop 43125!  You are A-W-E-S-O-M-E!!!!!!

Snowglobe Instructions

Here are the instructions to make your own snowglobe.

Supplies:
  • Jar that will hold liquid - the brand in the photo (from JoAnns bridal dept) does NOT hold liquid well, but they're cute.
  • Glitter - I used 2 different brands since it appears some brands use "heavier" glitter that doesn't "float" as well
  • Water
  • Glycerine - you can find it in the pharmacy dept. of any drug store (at Bartell's it is with the Hydrogen Peroxide)
  • Miniature Figures - make sure they are plastic so they don't get ruined sitting in the water (wood & paper will get ruined)
  • Waterproof Glue - silicone probably works well, but you should research it before committing it to your project

  1. Glue your miniature figure into the bottom or the lid of you jar.
  2. Add glitter.  Too much is not always better, so be reasonable.
  3. Add water, leaving space at the top of the jar.
  4. Add glycerine.  This is to thicken up the water so the glitter doesn't fall straight down.  I've read tutorial saying everything from a few drops to 50 /50 with the water.  Experiment to find what is right for your project - we used a teaspoon for the little jars.
  5. Add a bead (ring) of glue all the way around the top of the jar.
  6. Screw the lid on tight.
  7. Let the glue dry before turning the jar over.
  8. Let it snow!

The New Uniforms are Here!

Our cadette uniforms are ready - I will distribute them tomorrow at the fieldtrip.  If you are not attending the fieldtrip, I will have it at the next GS meeting on Fri. Dec. 6.  There are a few things that you can (and should) move from your Junior (or Brownie) uniform to your new vest:

1)  The two pins on the ribbon - the World Trefoil pin (blue & gold) and the GS Membership pin (green & gold).
2)  The wings from bridging up to Junior from Brownies and the straight rainbow from bridging up to Cadettes from Juniors.
3)  All of you membership stars.
4)  Your Bronze Award if you have one.
5)  Any patches from the back of your vest that have "year bars" with them - like Operation Cookie Drop, Camp, etc.  There's a good chance you will add more years to them.

If you have a vintage GS Membership pin that was given to you (maybe your mom was a GS or a friend?), you can wear that in place of the green & gold Membership pin.

If you have questions, please email me.  This will be your vest until you bridge up to... wait for it... wait for it... [gulp] Adults.  Yes, that's when you are taller than me.  And you know what?  I bet I will cry when that happens.  lol

Homework: Financing My Dreams Patch

Fill out the worksheet that we started at the last meeting.  When you are done, turn it in to me and I will get you the patch.  This patch will go on the front of your vest.

1.  Explore dream jobs - pick 3 jobs (hopefully at least one will not be a "fantasy job").  Find the typical salary for that job - here is a website that might help from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

2.  What is your dream home and where is it?  Find out how much it will cost - here is a website that might help from Redfin.

3.  Where would you go on your dream vacation?  Figure out how much it will cost (with hotel, airfare, rental car, food, tickets to attractions, spending money, etc.) - here is a website that might help from Travelocity.

4.  Who would you donate money to if you got to make the choice?  Pick a charity and how much you would donate a month.  If you would make 1 big donation per year, just divided that number by 12 so that you know how much you would spend per month.

5.  Figure out your additional living expenses.  You can ask your parents to help you with those numbers - they can be based on living in Seattle, even if your dream is to live in New York.

Does your salary cover all of the expenses that you would have living your dream life?
